VOIP - Internet Telephony And How You Use It

VOIP stands for voice over Internet protocol.  Basically, this technology allows you to speak as you would on the telephone but using the Internet to do it.

Why is this of interest to an indie musician?

I will outline why this is a very powerful technology to use.

Like it or not, a lot of your promotional efforts will revolve around using the telephone. VOIP will allow you to cut your phone bills in a far more significant way than any of the low cost call deals offered by telephone companies and in particular, when it comes to international calls.

E-mail is an extremely useful and cost effective way to communicate the when it comes to making that important contact it is still better to speak to people.  This holds true even on the Internet.  For example, let's say there's a particular web site you want to contact about a review or selling your stuff.  Any of the busier music related web sites will get hundreds if not thousands of e-mails per day so when you think about it, dialing a telephone number and speaking to someone is actually a very easy way of making yourself completely stand out from the crowd!

Most well-established web sites will have addresses and telephone numbers listed as well as the old reliable the e-mail address so finding the information and going about making the contact by ringing them rather than e-mailing will usually be very straightforward.

Any of the currently available VOIP services are really easy to set up on your home computer and very easy to use.

It's strange how in the very Internet orientated world we live in that something as old-fashioned as ringing and speaking directly to somebody can have such an effect and stranger still that this effect has become amplified as more and more people choose e-mail as their primary method of communication.

So the moral of the story is:

A phone call will go a long way and VOIP will make your phone call money stretch a lot further.
