Apart from your own web site, I want to talk to you about online music
distributors or OMDs as they have become commonly known.
This really works a little bit like the idea of product placement in movies. Rather than just promoting your music on your official web site you place samples of your music on very is all the web sites that will then bring in new visitors to your own site if they like what they've heard.
You may have had some previous experience in this area but whether that is the case are not, I would like you to take a look at this in the context of your overall plan rather than just in isolation.
Even if you have tried OMDs before and had little success with them please bear with me.
As has been mentioned several times, getting other web sites linking is probably the single most important ingredient when it comes to your ranking on Google.
Normal webmasters spend a lot of their time scrambling around trying to find sites that will link to them.
Being a musician, you have a major advantage in this regard in that there are any number of web sites that will allow you to put up a profile and a sample of your music.
Chances are these profiles on these web sites will not bring you a flood of traffic. Don't get me wrong, they will bring in some visitors and that is always a good thing but the really useful thing about these sites is often overlooked.
The more sites that link to yours, the better you will do in all the major search engines so the most important point about this is not how many visitors these sites will send you directly but how much they will help your ranking in the search engines.
So what do I suggest?
Pick all of the major OMDs and make sure you have a profile on them which includes the single most important element. A link back to your web site.
I am not suggesting that you need to be an active member of the community in all of these sites. You can do that if you wish but more importantly you need to have a profile with that link!
One other vital aspect of this is:
If possible, format the link so that it is your name rather than just the address. This is called anchor text and is also a helpful ingredient in making those links count just that little bit more.
